Skin Cancer
What it is:
Skin cancer develops when skin cells grow in an uncontrolled way, often due to UV damage from the sun or tanning beds. The two main types are non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers.
Symptoms:
- A new mole or growth
- A mole that changes shape, colour or size
- A sore that doesn’t heal
- A patch of skin that bleeds, itches or crusts
Most skin changes are harmless, but any new or changing mole should be checked.
Diagnosis:
Doctors may examine the skin closely or remove a small sample (biopsy) to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment:
There are different treatment options available, depending on the type and stage of the cancer. If you are diagnosed, your doctor will explain what’s best for you and guide you through the next steps.
