Complimentary Therapy

ACS understands that health involves more than just body: in a way where the mind and body are closely linked. it is currently an accepted belief that therapies help patients cope with stress of cancer and its treatments. since these therapies are relaxing, this may improve the mood when patients are not feeling at their best. if a patient would like to pursue alternative methods of compliment conventional treatments, e.g., specific dietary needs, acupuncture, massage etc., Acheinu supports the patient's choice.

Hospital transport:

Due to their medical condition, many patients are unable to travel by public transport to hospital for appointments and treatments. ACS has a team of dedicated volunteers who drive patients and their family members to hospital, and we will also sponsor Uber cars when needed.

Funds and grants

We assist families of patients with applying for grants to cover the costs of medical equipment, travel, respite or household items, which they desperately need. Additionally, we support patients with applying for benefits such as PIP, or Carers Allowance to further ease their financial burden. These emergency grants help remove some of the burdensome financial pressure’s cancer patients are experiencing and give them the ability to better focus on their journey toward health.

Care packages:

We pride ourselves in offering individual care packages to suit the need of the patient/family. in many cases, Acheinu will deliver a special care package straight to the hospital. Depending on the patients age, these packages include games, toys, special magazines, pampering sets as well as warm nutritious meals. The patient is also provided with any specific help he/she may need or wishes to have.

Food and household deliveries

Many cancer patients and their families are suffering from financial hardship since they are unable to work or have reduced their work hours due to health issues. Moreover, patients and their families who are consumed by appointments, treatments and the physical and emotional side effects of cancer, are usually unable to cook their own meals during these hectic times. It is vitally important, now more than ever, for them to receive nutritious meals so that they have the physical and emotional strength to cope with the disease and heal. ACS provide daily cooked meals as well as weekly household deliveries to those in need, thus directly alleviating some of their suffering.

Medical advice and referrals

It can be incredibly difficult for a patient to determine the right path forward for themselves. Often, cancer patients are barraged by treatment recommendations, specialist referrals, and more. Trained ACS specialists, under the guidance of licensed medical practitioners, help each patient explore the most appropriate physicians and treatments for their individual diagnosis. Unfamiliar with the complex world of cancer treatments, patients are often confused, frightened and unsure of how to proceed. Knowledgeable specialists provide each patient with adequate information to make informed decisions about their medical care, arrange for second opinions and referrals when necessary, and expedite appointments when time is of the essence.

Medical research

Cancer patients must deal with a wide range of information sources. They’ve got their primary physician. They have at least one oncologist, but perhaps more. They may have clinics and other medical offices supplying information and guidance. All of these sources may provide guidance and advice that conflicts. For patients who are already tired, stressed, and afraid, it makes a difficult situation that much more challenging.

Hospital intermediary:

To many patients going to the hospital and liaising with the staff is very daunting. It is a very unfamiliar and complex system to navigate on their own and requires a lot of hands-on advocacy, guidance and support to ensure that the patient and their caregivers are on the same page throughout this difficult journey.

Sometimes it’s just to help the families understand the structure of the hospital process, the differences between the attending doctors, residence staff/fellows and other parties in the patient care team. In many instances, it also involves on-site and off-site advocacy on behalf of the patient's care and needs.

When appropriate, ACS staff make certain to connect the patient to other hospital liaisons and patient advocacy organizations to ensure that the patient’s needs are properly attended to at all times.

Awareness and prevention:

At Acheinu Cancer Support, we go beyond providing patient companionship, family support, and financial assistance. We believe that raising awareness and actively screening for cancer are the best ways to help people defeat this frightening disease. We aim to raise awareness through continuous events and get-togethers, coupled with sharing educational information about the most prevalent types of cancer, risk factors, and other elements necessary to advocate for early screening and prevention.

Support workers:

At Acheinu Cancer Support, we understand how difficult it can be for cancer patients. Frightening diagnosis and gruelling treatment regimen leave patients feeling alone, lost and isolated.
In order to ensure that patients receive all the support they need, ACS appoints a dedicated support worker for each patient who serves as a single point of contact, ensuring they are provided with practical assistance such as referrals, meals and equipment as well as emotional support including companionship, therapy referrals, or simply a listening ear. Support workers provide patients with a consistent source of support, care and love throughout their cancer journey, thus improving patients’ wellbeing and chances of survival.

Support groups

We host support groups for adults who are either patients or spouses of patients. The advantage of these groups is helping people realise that they are not alone. through the sharing of experiences, they're able to offer support, encouragement, and comfort to the other group members, and receive the same in return.
Additionally, ACS hosts support groups for children and teens which creates a safe space for them to learn more and explore their fears or questions without judgement.

Respite and trips:

ACS have seen evidence that an enjoyable family trip away from hospitals and doctor appointments allows the family to come together and experience adventures, find support and learn something new about themselves. ACS offers 5 family trips a year including: Amusement Parks, Farms, Adventure Parks, Museums and more.
Additionally, we often arrange holiday accommodations in the rural countryside for families who desperately seek respite. This enables them to relax and recharge in a beautiful environment, infusing them with strength and hope to continue on their challenging journey.

Individual therapy:

ACS offers funding towards 18 therapy sessions to those affected by cancer. We outsource integrative counsellors who use several mediums in session, enabling every client to be supported within their needs. All therapists are qualified and registered under a professional body.

Annual retreats:

ACS has seen the tremendous need for people living with cancer to recharge their 'batteries' thus enabling them to ease their suffering. Therefore, ACS arranges an annual weekend for adults affected by cancer. A full program is prepared, including social activities, discussions, singing and dancing, leaving participants feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
