Leukaemia

What it is:

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It starts when the body makes too many abnormal white blood cells, which affects the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and fight infection.

Symptoms:

  • Ongoing tiredness
  • Frequent infections
  • Bruising or bleeding easily
  • Bone pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

These symptoms are often caused by common illnesses, but persistent or unusual changes should be checked.

Diagnosis:

Doctors usually carry out blood tests and a bone marrow sample to confirm the type of leukaemia.

Treatment:

There are different treatment options available, depending on the type and stage of the cancer. If you are diagnosed, your doctor will explain what’s best for you and guide you through the next steps.
