Lymphoma
What it is:
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, part of the body’s immune defence. It begins when white blood cells (lymphocytes) grow and divide abnormally. There are two main types: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Symptoms:
- Painless swollen lymph nodes (neck, armpit or groin)
- Ongoing tiredness
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
Swollen glands are common and usually not cancer, but persistent swelling should be checked.
Diagnosis:
A biopsy of a lymph node is usually needed, along with blood tests and scans, to confirm the type and stage.
Treatment:
There are different treatment options available, depending on the type and stage of the cancer. If you are diagnosed, your doctor will explain what’s best for you and guide you through the next steps.
