The strain on the family

A diagnosis of cancer can be devastating, not just for the individual, but also for their family and friends. In many cases, the strain and stress is so much that the family begins to deteriorate and fall apart. According to the National Cancer Institute, a diagnosis of cancer and the resulting upheavals can make “the people in your life feel worried, angry, or afraid. Family members may be very supportive, or they may start acting differently toward you [the cancer patient]. Some may feel guilty that they are not sick, or they may feel helpless, not knowing how to help you.”

A diagnosis of cancer always have a profound impact on almost every aspect of family life, including the following:

  • Changing roles involving caregivers
  • Changes to routine and schedules
  • Additional time off work
  • Financial troubles due to lost time at work and medical costs
  • The need for additional assistance in running errands and handling tasks
  • Living arrangements may change
  • Daily activities will change significantly

There are myriad effects here, as well. For instance, financial stress can impact a marriage, as well as affecting child/parent relationships. Changing schedules and routines can leave minor children feeling like their lives are up in the air even as they worry about a parent or guardian diagnosed with cancer. There is also the emotional impact to consider – even the most optimistic family member will still struggle with questions about a worst-case scenario.
